Have I ever mentioned how much I loathe the smell of pot?

And thanks to some vagary of building luck, my desk sits right in a corner where the smell from downstairs can just slide right in.

Every time I report it, to the manager (who is quite sympathetic) or the cops, the cops show up too late to catch the guy actually toking, and they can't enter the apartment and search it without probable cause, namely the stink. And quite right, too; I don't want jackbooted thugs on my police force, thank you very much. But it does make things unpleasant for me whenever the guy gets it into his head to have a few hits.

They have a baby, too. This offends me--that they'd smoke anything, but especially pot, with a baby in the house.

Yuck.

I feel your pain. Oh, boy do I ever feel your pain. Not having to smell it EVERY SINGLE FUCKING DAY is the thing I am the most excited about in regards to my upcoming move.

Isn't your building the kind that has bathrooms with ventilator fans?

If only he'd smoke somewhere else in the apt, it wouldn't annoy you and you wouldn't call the cops. That has got to be freaking him out.

Yes, it has ventilator fans. There's just something letting the smell up into my corner of the living room--like a tiny gap between the floor and the wall or something.

I have no idea if it freaks him out, since to my knowledge the cops never get here in time to smell the smoke and therefore probably have never knocked on his door about it. I don't bother calling any more; I just report it to the manager for his future reference. Or something.

Srsly. Though you can't count on that unless you've been at your new place for a while and know for sure nobody around there smokes it. Is this at home or on the way to work?

The idea of reporting someone to the police for smoking pot just seems so bizarre to me, but I think our laws about cannabis are a lot more lax than the US equivalents.

There are a bunch of teenagers on our estate who sit on the external stairs sometimes smoking pot. But they're not rowdy and they're polite and always get out the way if you want to get past, so it mostly doesn't bother me (I used to live in a house with someone who smoked pot quite heavily, so the smell has long since stopped bothering me), I'm just glad that they're not doing something harder.

But it sucks that it does bother you and you can't do anything about it :( could you ask him to smoke it somewhere else in his flat?

Well, I do know the people I am moving in with in Oregon. Right now, it is on the way to work, on the way from work, at home, and occasionally at work. (When people go get high during lunch and come back smelling like it.
