Madeleine L'Engle has died.

Such a pity she's not in the world any more. Her books meant so much to me when I was a kid. She transcended genres. She had a real gift for weaving her faith into her work in a way that felt integral to the story she was telling, but never preachy. She wrote the kind of books that change you.

One of cleolinda's readers, faeriemaiden, wrote a lovely and thoughtful tribute to her. I don't know her, but I wanted to share it anyway.

Of all her books, I think A Ring of Endless Light is my favorite. According to her website, new editions of the whole Time Quintet were just released this past May.

I think it's time to re-read.

Whoa. Humboldt County has declared that corporations aren't legally people.

Challenging Corporate Power: California Community Says Companies Are Not People; Bans Campaign Donations

In 2006, Humboldt County, California, became the latest, and largest, jurisdiction to abolish the legal doctrine known as "corporate personhood."

Measure T was successful because our all-volunteer campaign came together to pass a law that bans non-local corporations from participating in Humboldt elections. The referendum, which passed with 55 percent of the vote, also asserts that corporations cannot claim the First Amendment right to free speech.

By enacting Measure T, Humboldt County has committed an act of "municipal civil disobedience," intentionally challenging "settled law." But voters also recognize that Measure T is an act of common sense. We polled our community and found that 78 percent believe corruption is more likely if corporations participate in politics.

I'll be watching the progress of this legal challenge with great interest. It was a bad, sad day for democracy when the Supreme Court issued its opinion giving corporations the rights of individuals.
