no worries... not only can I not cook rice, I've actually destroyed one pot & put a hole in the deck while trying to cool off said destroyed pot.

It seems simple enough, but rice is a *bitch* to cook. That's why there are specialized rice steamers and strainer-thingies to make it.

I wish I'd known about some of these things before I ruined that one pan...

Rice is trickier than everyone gives it credit for. I've ruined at least two pots because of it.

Tell the rice that you know where its children sleep. If it works on the mailman, it'll work on other side dishes.

Going Postal paella

You will need:

1 medium pan
1 crock pot

3 cups long grain rice
2 tb butter or margarine
2 red onions, minced
1 bell pepper, minced
1 cup diced mailman, deceased

. . . that's all I remember, other than the sneaking suspicion that Jack Daniels figures into it somehow . . . uh . . .

How does a rice cooker look? I think I never came across one (except you mean these quirly men in the kitchen...)

since I like eggs hardboiled that's not an issue. ;)
I'm actually put off my eggs not solid in the middle, so anything cooked longer than 7 minutes (without exploding *eg*) is fine. Besides, grandma cooks them (less side-effects on the kitchen ;).)

Interesting. I think I never saw one in store here. But then, most rice over here comes in boil-bags anyway, and there's also a boil-bag-system to use on loose rice obtained otherwise. So maybe rice cookers just aren't "en vogue" here (or I shop in the wrong stores).

I couldn't live without my rice cooker because japanese sticky rice is my favorite kind! I got it at Soko Hardware in SF's Japantown. Perfect rice every time. I get an extra geek thrill because it says "National" on the front in the same font as "Panasonic" because National just invented "Panasonic" as a brand for us Western folk.

don't worry about it. i am the WORST cook ever and no one's begrudging me for that. (: I can't even make toast pretty much without screwing it up. But that's alright, we both have other talents! especially you!

and rice is hard. it gets all... well, it's hard. i mess it up all the time. and worse each time; i just keep getting less good at it.
