"Like a lighthouse guides a weary sailor, the editor guides the mind of a weary writer. A stormy sea of rewrites, ugly quotations and overstuffed paragraphs can tire the most vigilant of writers leaving them slumped over a keyboard looking for shore. But as long as an editor is there to a breath fresh air into an idea and guide the hopeless into port, then there is hope."

(I got this from someone on my editors' mailing list. It was part of a long post featuring bad prose. This was--I kid you not--someone's ad for his or her editing services. Scary.)
