Poetry is dangerous.
Apr. 30th, 2007 01:57 pmSo first we got Driving While Black, which is heinous enough.
Now we're getting Recyling While Dark-Skinned?
*fumes*
Sometimes it's really easy to despise the willfully ignorant and the racist and the I'm-not-a-racist-some-of-my-best-friends-are-black people. I just try to remember that they're ignorant and scared and it becomes easier to let go. I wonder what was going through that ROTC kid's head? Was he afraid, or angry, or filled with hatred?
But I will not let go of my absolute contempt for George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and their little junta of cronies.
They are the ones who perpetuate a culture of fear.
They are the ones who lie and lie and lie to the public... and then when they're done, they lie some more.
They are the ones who are working hard to roll back every advance in environmental justice, equal rights, and social progress that our country has made in the last fifty fucking years. At least.
In the face of all of this, it's sometimes really hard not to get discouraged. But we're trying. Progressives are trying, and we're winning some and losing some but we're not giving up. And when the federal government refuses to act, we're taking it local and working upwards.
We are artists and writers and lawyers and poets and teachers and photographers and computer programmers and bloggers and editors and many more. And you know what else? We're pissed.
Poetry is dangerous. You're damned right it is.
