Court: U.S. can bar mad-cow testing

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court says the government can prohibit meat packers from testing their animals for mad cow disease.

Because the Agriculture Department tests only a small percentage of cows for the deadly disease, Kansas meatpacker Creekstone Farms Premium Beef wants to test all of its cows. The government says it can't.

Larger meat companies worry that if Creekstone is allowed to perform the test and advertise its meat as safe, they could be forced to do the expensive test, too.

WHAAAAAAT.

The FDA has been gutted to the core. It's ridiculous. "Fast Food Nation" devotes a whole chapter to the FDA and how it really does little to keep food safe for human consumption in this country. If you haven't read it, I highly recommend it.

I read it a couple of years ago, finished The Omnivore's Dilemma this summer... So, yes, I'm not a big fan of the beef industry.

But oxtails in particular are scary because they contain a bit of the spinal cord - neural tissue directly connected to the brain, the happy home of the BSE prions.
