Jumping through hoops to get my preliminary (that is, 5-year temporary) adult education teaching credential in English and ESL. Turns out I had everything I needed to qualify and never even knew it! So now I just have to wait for UCB Extension to send me the paperwork (application), which I will submit to them and which they will in turn send to the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. (You have to have a sponsoring institution, which makes sure you qualify before the Commission gets involved. Saves a ton of time/paperwork for everyone.) Then I have five years to "clear" the credential, or do all the coursework to qualify for a permanent (called "clear" for some reason) credential. I am taking two of the needed classes this summer, starting on Saturday.
I'm not really sure how long it will take 'til I have that important piece of paper in my hands, but I hope it's fast. The credential will HUGELY increase the number of places I can find paying work. And I've already got one gig lined up; too bad it starts in September.
No, wait. Thank GOD it starts in September! I have to do lesson planning. I have to get some practice doing actual teaching. The classes will help with this. I am unbelievably nervous about this, because I didn't do ANY student teaching in grad school, as I wasn't planning to teach; I was planning to edit. But we all know what happened to *those* plans. :P At least I can look back to six months of successful computer training work. And the fact that I am motivated by fear of credit-rating ruin might help, right? ;)
