A rant on education

This is so, so true, and it's so, so fucked.

So while I'm on the subject...

It chaps my ass that execs at companies that make big popular bullshit products--just stuff that people want to buy because it's amusing or whatever, not stuff that does a damn thing to make the world better, like, say, Gameboys, or Hollywood blockbusters, or The Next Big Masturbatory Dot-Com Thing--pull down huge amounts of money while the people who are out there educating our society's children (or, hell, the adults who got churned through our broken school system and got spat out functionally illiterate, or who have just gotten to this country and need to learn English so they can, you know, get a job, feed their kids, that kind of useless nonsense) get paid shit-all.

So I guess that's my rant. Yeah.

it's much the same here in australia. underpaid. i don't think it's quite so bad though, since you don't really hear of teachers taking other jobs, apart from tutoring. and i would have heard, teaching's big in my family. but i think the unions put their collective foot down and demanded better pay. but then, everyone hated teachers, because "how dare they stop babysitting the kids just so that they can get better pay." it's stupid. and as for the "oh, they only work from nine to three" - during primary school i remember having to get up early so that my mother could be at school at eight, when they were expected to be there, and after school i usually had about two hours of doing homework and reading books before we'd go home. then we'd go home, she'd nap until dinner, eat, then mark papers and file schoolwork 'til past midnight. all for a reasonably small amount of money. the western outlook needs a bitchslap.
