Memory of East Oakland

This just popped into my head while I was reading the news.

Amy and I were returning to Mills in my little blue VW Rabbit. I don't remember why we were off campus. We'd just gotten off 580 when we spotted a couple of black men with a big old sedan pulled over onto the shoulder of the offramp. One started to approach, and I rolled down my window a little. They just needed to borrow my jumper cables for a minute. So I lent them, and it all turned out fine.

But as I started to roll down my window, Amy looked over at me and asked in horror, "Elizabeth, are you crazy?"

Nah, just the product of a sheltered upbringing. ^_^

(She had a point, though. When we were first at Mills, that part of East Oakland was somewhat unsafe.)

Dude it is still unsafe. Oakland isn't the murder capital of the country for nothing.

But if you only rolled down your window a little, I say that you weren't being too unsafe. You aren't sheltered, just good hearted. Well, maybe a little sheltered. But I would hope I would do the same in your place.

Glad to hear from you again. I thought you had posted one too many anti-Bush entries and the Patriot Act Police had come and taken you away for reprogramming.
