I think "broken" covers it if spread thinly. There is something very, very fucked up in our country's criminal justice system where it touches the lives of Native Americans. We can all thank the great men who signed and broke and signed and broke and signed all those treaties with the Indians. And I have no earthly idea how we could go about fixing it.

The short version:
Pretty Bird Woman House, a South Dakota domestic abuse/rape shelter has been broken into, cleaned out of anything remotely valuable, and then subsequently burned down by vandals.

Bad enough, but then I read the DailyKos story and flames practically started coming out of my head.

From an Amnesty International report quote in the DKos story:

Amnesty International’s interviews with survivors, activists and support workers across the USA suggest that available statistics greatly underestimate the severity of the problem. In the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, for example, many of the women who agreed to be interviewed could not think of any Native women within their community who had not been subjected to sexual violence.

Suspects shoot father, murder infant son execution-style

14:02 PDT SACRAMENTO, (AP) --

Seconds after killing a 21-year-old father during a suspected home-invasion robbery on Friday, two suspects fired a bullet into the head of the man's 7-month-old son who was seated in a car seat, police said this weekend as they released new details on the case.

Investigators initially reported that the father, Sean Paul Aquitania, was killed inside a home after an attempted robbery and that his infant son, Sean Paul Aquitania Jr., was accidentally caught in the crossfire. But a more thorough investigation throughout the weekend determined that the son had been murdered execution-style in the car seat of his dad's Chevrolet Malibu.

"We are angered as law enforcement officers and disturbed as human beings that anyone could commit such an unconscionable act against an innocent child," said sheriff's spokesman Sgt. Tim Curran.

This world of ours can be so hideously unfair. Please send your prayers, good thoughts, wishes, good vibes, whatever, toward that poor baby's mother.

The man who fired that shot—surely only one of them shot the baby?—is an evil person. He must be so utterly broken inside, but I still can't find it in myself to pity him.

A story you need to hear about, but the media--for some bizarre reason--won't cover: Indiana man beaten to death over several hours... and his killers are claiming the "sudden heat" of "gay panic." Even though he might not have been gay. Even though they took their sweet time torturing and beating him. Even though they took camera-phone pictures mid-beating and texted them to a friend. And this was two months ago.
