Cool.

Paperback Swap is one of those cool new economy things where an old-fashioned idea, that of swapping, gets a modern update. You post books you'd be willing to mail to people; in return, you get credits and can request books for other people to mail to you. All you pay for is the postage. I've posted eleven books this evening; one's already set to be mailed as soon as I can get to the post office, and four others have been requested and are just waiting for confirmation that the requesters have enough credits for the books. I know it does happen that people sometimes get burned, but the members are mostly pretty cool.

Reminds me a little of Bruce Sterling's short story "Maneki Neko" from his collection A Good Old-Fashioned Future. Only in that case, the protagonist's PDA is arranging his contributions to a computer-mediated gift economy, and others' PDAs are doing the same thing.

ETA: Almost forgot: If you decide to sign up, I'd be obliged if you'd give them my name as a referrer, as I get credits whenever someone signs up because I referred them. You can give them my e-mail address; if you need it, e-mail or comment and I'll send it to you. (Scraping = DNW.)

This.

Yes.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] psybelle has already linked in her comment to the main site for the Advent Conspiracy; they have links out to a couple of water projects. The ONE Campaign features a few NGOs that do work around clean drinking water as well. It's not an area I'm very familiar with, but I think that's going to change.

Ganked from [livejournal.com profile] eyetosky (her post is here) by way of [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda (here.

The short version:
Pretty Bird Woman House, a South Dakota domestic abuse/rape shelter has been broken into, cleaned out of anything remotely valuable, and then subsequently burned down by vandals.

Bad enough, but then I read the DailyKos story and flames practically started coming out of my head.

From an Amnesty International report quote in the DKos story:
Amnesty International’s interviews with survivors, activists and support workers across the USA suggest that available statistics greatly underestimate the severity of the problem. In the Standing Rock Sioux Reservation, for example, many of the women who agreed to be interviewed could not think of any Native women within their community who had not been subjected to sexual violence.

WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE
JESUS

Luckily, there are great people helping Pretty Bird Woman House. Three things we can do:
1. Donate money for a new house.
2. Donate items for the shelter. Details in [livejournal.com profile] eyetosky's post
3. Spread the word: blog this. Please. Even if you can't afford to donate anything, just spread this meme.

Those folks in SD are doing a great, great thing. They just need a little help.
